YACHT & BOAT PARTIES

Yacht Party Entertainment Hong Kong and Bangkok

DJs, sax players and dancers who know how to work a junk boat deck or a Chao Phraya cruiser, and understand exactly how much power and space you actually have.

Quick answer

Yacht party entertainment in Hong Kong usually means a DJ or sax player on a junk boat in Victoria Harbour or around Sai Kung, with a self-contained battery sound system since most junks have limited onboard power. In Bangkok, it means a band or DJ on a Chao Phraya river cruise, where many boats already have house PA. Book 3 to 6 weeks ahead, confirm deck size and power before anything else, and expect a trio of DJ, sax, and one dancer to be the most common booking.

1. The basics

What yacht party entertainment actually involves

A yacht or boat party is a smaller, tighter version of a normal event. You lose the stage, the green room, and usually the mains power you'd get in a hotel ballroom. What you gain is a view nobody forgets. The entertainment has to fit that: a DJ with a compact rig, a sax or violin player who can move around a crowded deck, one or two dancers rather than a troupe, maybe a magician working table to table during a seated dinner leg. Full bands work on the bigger Bangkok river boats. They rarely work on a Hong Kong junk, because there just isn't the deck space.

Most bookings for yacht party entertainment in Hong Kong are corporate team outings, year end parties, or private birthday charters for 20 to 80 guests. In Bangkok the mix is wider: corporate dinners, wedding welcome parties, and tourist charter groups booking a sunset cruise with music laid on.

2. Hong Kong

Hong Kong junk boat parties

Junk boat season runs roughly April to October, with the harbour and the waters around Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay busiest on weekends from May to September. A typical junk takes 20 to 50 guests comfortably, bigger vessels up to 100. Deck space for entertainment is small, usually just a corner of the upper deck, so we default to a DJ with compact speakers and a battery system, or a solo sax or violin player who can walk the deck rather than stay fixed in one spot.

If the charter departs from Aberdeen, Sai Kung, or a Central pier and heads out into open water, signal and phone reception can drop, which matters if your DJ is running anything cloud based. We build playlists and backup tracks locally on the device for exactly this reason. Chinese New Year charters and the run up to it are the single busiest booking window of the year for junk party entertainment, so if you want a date in that window, lock it in 6 to 8 weeks out rather than the usual 3 to 4.

For corporate groups wanting something more structured than a DJ set, a lot of our Hong Kong clients pair the boat leg with a short dinner or awards segment back on land. See our corporate entertainment in Asia page if that's the shape of your event.

3. Bangkok

Bangkok river cruise parties

Chao Phraya dinner cruises are a different animal to a Hong Kong junk. The boats are bigger, many already carry a house PA and a small stage area, and a lot of operators run a fixed two or three hour route past Wat Arun and the river temples with dinner service built in. That changes what works: a live band or a duo singer plus keys can actually set up properly, rather than being squeezed onto a DJ booth the size of a card table.

Loy Krathong in November and the week around Songkran in April are the two periods where river cruise bookings spike hardest, partly because so many corporate and family groups want to be on the water for the fireworks or the water festival itself. Boats get booked out weeks ahead for those dates, and so does the entertainment that goes with them, so treat those two windows as a 6 week minimum lead time, not the usual 3 to 4.

For a seated dinner cruise, we usually recommend a live band for the main two sets with a DJ filling the gaps, since a full band changeover mid cruise isn't realistic once you're on the water. Browse live bands in Bangkok and Hong Kong for the lineups that tend to work on these cruises.

4. Phuket and beyond

Phuket and Singapore yacht charters

Phuket yacht charters, usually out of Ao Po Grand Marina or Chalong, tend to be smaller private groups on catamarans or motor yachts, often for a half day or sunset charter rather than a full evening. Entertainment here is almost always a single performer: a DJ with a small battery rig, or a sax or acoustic guitar player, since these boats carry fewer guests and far less deck space than a junk or a river cruiser.

In Singapore, yacht charters mostly depart from Sentosa Cove or ONE°15 Marina, and in Kuala Lumpur you're usually looking at a dinner cruise rather than a private yacht, departing near the KLCC waterfront. Both markets follow the same rule as Hong Kong and Bangkok: confirm deck size and power before booking talent, not after.

5. The part people forget

Space, power and sound limits on board

This is where most yacht party bookings go wrong, and it's almost always about power, not talent. Many junks and smaller charter yachts run on a generator with limited spare capacity once lighting, the bar fridge, and the boat's own sound system are drawing from it. A DJ rig that would be no problem in a ballroom can trip a breaker on a boat. We ask every client for the vessel's available power points and generator capacity before we confirm equipment, and where it's uncertain, we default to battery powered speakers and a compact mixer rather than assume mains will hold.

Deck space is the second issue. A sax or violin player needs roughly 2 by 2 metres to move in. A two person dance act needs more like 3 by 3 metres of clear, flat deck, which on a crowded junk with 40 guests standing around often doesn't exist until the boat anchors and some of the crowd sits down to eat. We always ask for deck photos or a layout plan before confirming a dance act on a boat under about 60 feet.

The most expensive mistake: booking a full band or a dance troupe for a boat without confirming deck size and power first. We've had bookings cancelled on the day because the generator couldn't carry a DJ rig alongside the boat's own sound and lighting, or because there simply wasn't floor space once guests were standing. Send us deck dimensions or at least boat length and guest count before you lock in anything beyond a solo performer.

Guide prices for yacht and boat party entertainment

These are rough guide ranges only. Final cost depends on set length, performer seniority, whether equipment needs to be battery powered, and whether the booking falls in a peak window like Chinese New Year or Songkran. Always confirm with a quote.

What to tell us before we quote

The faster we can confirm what's physically possible on your boat, the faster you get a real quote instead of a generic one. Tell us the vessel name or at least its length, the departure point, guest count, whether it's a Hong Kong junk, a Bangkok river cruise, or a Phuket charter, and whether there's a generator or mains power available for entertainment separate from the boat's own system.

  • Date, city and departure point (Aberdeen, Sai Kung, Central, Sathorn pier, Ao Po Marina, Sentosa Cove)
  • Guest count and whether it's standing, seated dinner, or both
  • Boat length or name, and deck layout if you have it
  • Available power: generator capacity, mains points, or battery only
  • Whether you want DJ, live music, dancers, magician, or a mix

If the boat leg is one part of a bigger event, say a wedding welcome party that moves from a cruise to a hotel reception, it helps to plan both legs together. Our wedding planning in Asia and event management pages cover how we handle multi venue days like that.

How much does yacht party entertainment cost in Hong Kong?

A solo DJ or sax player on a junk boat typically runs HKD 5,000 to 14,000 for a 2 to 3 hour charter, depending on set length and whether battery powered equipment is needed. A dancer or duo adds roughly HKD 6,000 to 12,000. Prices rise during Chinese New Year and peak summer weekends. These are guide ranges, always confirm with a quote based on your date and vessel.

Can a DJ perform on a Hong Kong junk boat?

Yes, and it's the most common booking. Most junks have limited spare power once the boat's own sound, lighting and bar fridge are running, so we generally use a battery powered speaker and compact mixer rather than rely on the vessel's generator. Deck space is usually a corner of the upper deck, so the rig has to be compact. Confirm generator capacity and deck layout before booking.

What entertainment works best on a Chao Phraya dinner cruise?

Live bands work well on Chao Phraya cruises because many boats are larger and already carry a house PA and small stage area, unlike a Hong Kong junk. A duo of singer plus keys or a small band covering two 45 minute sets is the most common booking, often with a DJ filling the breaks. Book 3 to 6 weeks ahead, 6 weeks around Loy Krathong and Songkran.

How far in advance should I book a yacht party DJ or band?

Three to four weeks is usually enough outside peak periods. Around Chinese New Year in Hong Kong, and around Songkran and Loy Krathong in Bangkok, book 6 to 8 weeks ahead, since both boats and performers get booked out well before the date itself. Smaller markets like Phuket charters can sometimes be arranged with 2 weeks notice if the act is available.

Is there enough power on a yacht for a DJ setup?

Often not enough to run a full DJ rig off the boat's own generator alongside its existing sound and lighting. We ask for the vessel's power capacity before confirming equipment and default to battery powered speakers and a compact mixer when it's unclear. This avoids the generator tripping mid set, which is the most common technical failure on boat party bookings.

Can dancers perform on a small yacht or junk boat?

Yes, but deck space limits it. A single dancer needs roughly 2 by 2 metres, a duo closer to 3 by 3 metres of clear, flat deck. On a crowded junk with guests standing, that space often doesn't exist until the boat anchors and people sit for food. We ask for deck photos or boat length before confirming a dance act on anything under about 60 feet.
