What you actually get when you book a violinist
A professional violinist booking in Bangkok or Hong Kong gives you a trained musician, their own instrument, and a set list built around your event timing, not a generic playlist. Most bookings run one to two hours of live playing, broken into short sets with breaks, because sustained playing for longer stretches tires the arm and the sound suffers. If you want continuous music for a four hour reception, ask for a duo or trio so players can rotate.
A proper agency booking also includes a backup plan. Freelance musicians found through social media rarely have one. If your violinist is sick or their flight is delayed into Bangkok on the morning of the wedding, there is no second option. When you book through us, we hold a shortlist of players in each city so a late change does not become a missing ceremony.
2. PricingGuide prices for hiring a violinist in Bangkok and Hong Kong
Prices depend on set length, number of players, travel distance and whether it is a public holiday. The ranges below are a starting point to confirm with a quote, not a fixed rate card.
| Act | Bangkok (THB) | Hong Kong (HKD) | Typical set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo violinist | 12,000 to 25,000 | 4,500 to 9,000 | 1 to 2 hours, broken sets |
| String duo (violin + cello or violin + violin) | 20,000 to 38,000 | 8,000 to 15,000 | 1.5 to 3 hours |
| String trio | 28,000 to 50,000 | 11,000 to 20,000 | 1.5 to 3 hours |
| String quartet | 38,000 to 70,000 | 15,000 to 30,000 | 1.5 to 3 hours |
Expect a premium for Chinese New Year, Christmas and New Year's Eve dates in Hong Kong, and for Songkran and year end dates in Bangkok, when demand is highest and some musicians charge a holiday rate. Rooftop and outdoor Phuket or Sentosa bookings usually carry a small travel and heat allowance on top of the base fee. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur quotes follow a similar structure in SGD and MYR, confirmed once we know the venue.
3. Lineup choiceSolo violin, duo, trio or quartet: what to pick
A solo violinist works well for a small ceremony, a cocktail hour, or background music where the room is already quiet and intimate. The sound is delicate and will not cut through a crowded rooftop bar or a ballroom with a loud bar service running.
A duo, usually violin and cello, gives more body and is the most requested option for a wedding ceremony and reception combined. A trio adds fuller harmony for a larger ballroom. A quartet is the choice for a formal hotel wedding, a gala dinner, or a corporate event where the string section needs to be heard clearly across a large room without relying heavily on amplification.
- Solo violin: intimate ceremonies, photo sessions, small cocktail gatherings
- Duo: ceremony plus reception, harbour cruises, rooftop bars with moderate crowd noise
- Trio: mid-size ballroom, product launches, gala dinners
- Quartet: large hotel ballroom, formal corporate gala, high guest count weddings
Weddings: ceremony, reception and the first dance
Most wedding bookings in Hong Kong and Bangkok split into three parts: guest arrival music, the ceremony itself, and reception background music or a first dance arrangement. Tell us your processional and recessional song choices early, because a violinist needs time to arrange a pop or Cantopop song for strings if it is not already a standard arrangement. Classical pieces and well known love songs are usually ready with little notice. A specific, less common song needs two to three weeks for the arrangement alone.
In Hong Kong, harbour view hotel ballrooms and Victoria Harbour cruise venues both work well for a string duo or trio, though a cruise booking needs confirmation on deck power and whether the venue allows amplifiers on the open deck. In Bangkok, riverside hotels and Chao Phraya dinner cruise venues are common requests, and outdoor garden ceremonies need a wind check, since a violin bow and sheet music both suffer in strong wind and sudden rain.
If you are planning the rest of the day's entertainment alongside the strings, our wedding planner Asia team can coordinate the violinist alongside the band changeover, the MC and the reception timeline so the music never has a dead gap.
5. CorporateCorporate events and cocktail receptions
A violinist or string duo is a common choice for the arrival and cocktail portion of a corporate dinner, gala or product launch in Hong Kong and Bangkok, before the room moves to a DJ or live band for the dancing part of the night. It reads as formal without being loud, which matters when executives are still arriving and networking.
For a product launch or brand event, some clients ask for a short featured performance, three to five minutes, timed to a reveal moment, rather than continuous background music. This is a different brief to a wedding and the musician needs the cue sheet and run of show in advance. If the event also needs a full band, dancers or a larger production, our corporate entertainment Asia page covers how we scope multi-act corporate bookings, and live bands in Bangkok and Hong Kong covers the band side if you need both.
6. TechnicalVenue and power requirements
An unamplified violin or string quartet works fine in a quiet ceremony space for up to around 60 to 80 guests. Beyond that, or in any space with background noise, a small PA with two speakers and a mixer is needed, along with at least one power outlet near the playing position. Outdoor rooftop venues in Hong Kong and Bangkok almost always need amplification because of wind, traffic noise and open air sound loss.
Tell us the floor type too. A string section usually plays standing or on tall stools, and a hard floor with no rug can make the sound brighter and slightly harsh in a reflective room like a glass-walled function space. A small riser is sometimes requested for visibility at larger weddings and galas so guests at the back of the room can actually see the players, not just hear them.
7. TimingBooking timeline and what to tell us
Book four to eight weeks ahead for a standard wedding or corporate date. Push that to three months or more if your date falls in December, around Chinese New Year in Hong Kong, around Songkran or Loy Krathong in Bangkok, or during Diwali and Hari Raya periods when Singapore and Kuala Lumpur venues get booked out early and musicians' calendars fill fast across all four cities.
The most expensive mistake is booking a solo violinist for a loud outdoor rooftop reception and assuming they will be heard over 150 guests and a bar. Without amplification the music becomes decorative rather than audible, and by the time anyone notices, it is too late to add a PA system on the day. Confirm sound needs against your actual guest count and venue type before you book, not after.
To get a quote, send us the date, city, venue name and guest count. We will also ask whether you want solo, duo, trio or quartet, whether you need a specific song arranged, and whether the venue has amplification already or needs a small PA added. If your event needs more than strings, our musicians page covers the full roster, and event management covers full production if you are coordinating multiple suppliers for the same date.
How much does it cost to hire a violinist in Bangkok or Hong Kong?
A solo violinist typically runs THB 12,000 to 25,000 in Bangkok or HKD 4,500 to 9,000 in Hong Kong for a one to two hour set, as a guide range to confirm with a quote. A duo, trio or quartet costs more, scaling roughly with the number of players, and prices rise for public holiday dates and outdoor venues needing extra sound equipment.
How far in advance should I book a wedding violinist?
Four to eight weeks ahead is standard for a wedding date in Bangkok or Hong Kong. Book three months or more ahead if your date falls during Chinese New Year, Songkran, Loy Krathong, December, or Diwali and Hari Raya periods, when both venues and musicians get booked out early across the region.
Can a violinist play a specific song for our first dance?
Yes, most violinists and string groups can arrange a specific song for strings, including pop songs and Cantopop or Thai songs, but an uncommon song needs two to three weeks of lead time for the arrangement to be written and rehearsed. Well known classical pieces and standard love songs are usually ready with much shorter notice.
Do I need a sound system for an outdoor ceremony?
In most cases yes. An unamplified string act works for a quiet indoor ceremony of up to around 60 to 80 guests, but outdoor rooftop and garden venues in both Bangkok and Hong Kong usually need a small PA because of wind, traffic noise and open air sound loss. Confirm this with the agency before the booking is finalised.
What is the difference between booking a duo, trio and quartet?
A duo, usually violin and cello, suits a ceremony plus reception or a rooftop bar with moderate noise. A trio fills a mid-size ballroom. A quartet is the standard choice for a large hotel ballroom, formal gala or high guest count wedding where the sound needs to carry clearly across the room.
Can you provide violinists in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur as well as Bangkok and Hong Kong?
Yes. Bangkok and Hong Kong are our main hubs, but we regularly book string musicians in Singapore, including Sentosa venues, and Kuala Lumpur, including the KLCC area, along with Macau and Phuket on request. Pricing is quoted in SGD or MYR once we know the venue and date.
To check availability, send the date, city, venue and guest count on WhatsApp at +65 9428 4249 or through our contact page, and we will come back with a quote and a shortlist of players for your date.
