1. The act

What a saxophonist actually does at your event

A saxophonist covers two very different jobs, and it helps to know which one you want before you call an agency. The first is background atmosphere: cocktail hour, a dinner, a reception line, where the player sits or stands near the bar or the entrance and plays over a backing track or alongside a DJ, mostly instrumental covers and smooth jazz lines, low enough that guests can still talk. The second is a performance moment: a live set timed to hit the room at a specific point, often with the sax player moving through the crowd, taking photos with guests, building energy before the dancefloor opens. Most bookings in Hong Kong and Bangkok are actually both, back to back, inside the same two or three hour slot.

If you are comparing a saxophonist against a full band for the same budget, our live bands in Bangkok and Hong Kong page breaks down what a band adds that a solo act can't, and where a sax plus DJ setup actually works better for a smaller room.

2. Pricing

Guide prices in Hong Kong and Bangkok

Price depends on set length, whether the player works with a DJ or brings their own backing tracks, and whether you want roaming between tables. A solo sax over recorded tracks is the cheapest option. Adding a live DJ to play alongside, or asking for the player to roam and interact with guests for the whole night, pushes the price up. These are guide ranges only, confirm the exact figure with a quote once we know your date and venue.

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur bookings run on a similar structure, usually quoted in SGD or MYR once we know the venue. Harbour cruises and outdoor rooftop dates in Hong Kong sometimes carry a small loading for load-in time and equipment protection, which we'll flag upfront, not add after.

3. Choosing the format

Solo sax, sax with DJ, or roaming sax: which one fits

Solo sax over backing tracks suits a dinner, a product launch, or a reception where conversation matters more than performance. It is the simplest setup, smallest footprint, and easiest to fit into a tight ballroom schedule. Sax with a DJ suits a wedding reception or a brand party where you want the room to build from dinner into a dance floor without a dead gap, the DJ carries the night and the sax player lifts specific songs live. Roaming sax works best for cocktail receptions, gala dinners and rooftop events where guests are standing and moving, the player walks the floor, takes requests, gets close to tables, and photographs well for your event coverage.

Corporate clients tend to book sax with DJ for the after-dinner stretch of an annual dinner or product launch. Couples tend to book roaming sax for the welcome drinks and solo sax with tracks for the ceremony or dinner. If you're planning either, our corporate entertainment and wedding entertainment pages go into how we sequence acts across a full event timeline.

4. Venues

Venues we book into most

In Hong Kong, ballroom hotels around Causeway Bay, Admiralty and Wan Chai book solo sax or sax with DJ for cocktail hours and dinner changeovers regularly, and rooftop bars across the island book roaming sax for sunset slots. Harbour cruises on Victoria Harbour are a strong fit for roaming sax, the deck space suits a player who moves rather than one fixed to a stage, and most charter boats have limited power so we confirm requirements with the boat operator in advance.

In Bangkok, riverside dinner venues along the Chao Phraya and rooftop bars in Sukhumvit and Silom book sax with DJ for evening sets, and five star ballrooms in the CBD book sax for gala dinners and award nights. In Singapore, Sentosa venues and CBD rooftop bars follow the same pattern, and in Kuala Lumpur, KLCC area hotels and function venues are the main bookers for corporate dinners and weddings.

5. Technical

Stage, power and sound requirements

A solo saxophonist needs very little: a single power socket, a small table or stand for an amp or speaker, and enough space to stand comfortably, roughly one by one metre. If the player is working with a DJ, you need a proper stage or riser area for the DJ booth plus speaker placement, worked out with the venue's AV team or our sound engineer beforehand. For roaming sets, no stage is needed at all, just a radio or wireless pack so the player can move freely without cables, which is standard for every roaming booking we run.

Outdoor and rooftop bookings need a wind and weather check, saxophone reeds and amplification are sensitive to strong wind and rain, and we build a covered backup plan into the booking confirmation for any open-air date. Harbour cruises and poolside events fall into this category too.

6. Timing

How far ahead to book, and festival dates to watch

For a standard weekday corporate booking, four weeks notice is usually enough. For a Friday or Saturday wedding, or any date near Chinese New Year, Christmas week, Songkran or Loy Krathong, book ten to twelve weeks ahead, popular saxophonists in both cities get held for multiple enquiries on the same date during these windows. Diwali and Hari Raya periods also see a spike in corporate and private bookings across Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, so the same lead time applies there. Last minute requests inside two weeks are sometimes possible, but your choice of player narrows fast and pricing can carry a short notice premium.

7. Booking process

What to tell us when you ask for a quote

To get an accurate quote fast, tell us the date, city and venue, guest count, and which format you want: solo, sax with DJ, or roaming. Tell us the event type, wedding, corporate dinner, private party, so we can match the right player and repertoire. If you already have a DJ or band booked, tell us, since the sax player needs to work to their set list and key, not the other way round. If you're also comparing dancers or additional live acts for the same night, our dancers in Hong Kong and Bangkok page and full musicians roster are worth checking at the same time, since we can bundle quotes for multiple acts on one event.

The most expensive mistake

Booking a saxophonist without confirming whether the venue allows amplified instruments and where power points are. Some rooftop bars and heritage venues in both cities restrict sound levels or have no outdoor power access, and finding this out on the day means a rushed, worse setup or a last minute cancellation. Confirm this with the venue before you confirm the booking, or let us handle that check as part of planning through our event management service.

How much does it cost to hire a saxophonist in Hong Kong?

A solo saxophonist in Hong Kong typically costs HK$5,000 to HK$10,000 for a two to three hour booking with backing tracks. Adding a live DJ or booking a roaming set for cocktail hour pushes the price to HK$10,000 to HK$16,000. The exact figure depends on venue, set length and timing, so confirm with a quote.

How much does a saxophonist cost in Bangkok?

In Bangkok, a solo saxophonist with backing tracks runs roughly THB 15,000 to THB 32,000 for a two to three hour booking, and sax with a live DJ runs THB 30,000 to THB 45,000. Riverside and rooftop venues sometimes carry a small setup loading, which we confirm before booking.

Can a saxophonist perform without a DJ or band?

Yes. A solo saxophonist can perform a full set over pre-recorded backing tracks, which is the most common and most affordable format for dinners, receptions and background atmosphere. No DJ or band is required unless you specifically want a bigger sound or a longer dance set, in which case sax with DJ is the better fit.

Do I need to provide a stage or sound system?

A solo saxophonist only needs a power socket and a small amp setup, no stage required. If booking sax with a DJ, you'll need a riser or booth area and proper speaker placement, usually arranged with the venue's AV team. Roaming sets need no stage at all, just a wireless pack for the player to move freely.

How far in advance should I book a saxophonist?

Book four weeks ahead for a standard weekday or off-season date. For weddings, Fridays and Saturdays, or dates around Chinese New Year, Christmas, Songkran or Loy Krathong, book ten to twelve weeks ahead, since popular players get booked out early in those windows. Shorter notice is sometimes possible with fewer player options and a possible premium.

Can you book a saxophonist for a harbour cruise or outdoor event?

Yes. Roaming sax works well on Victoria Harbour cruises and rooftop venues since it needs no fixed stage, just a wireless setup. For any outdoor or boat booking we confirm power access and a weather backup plan in advance, since reeds and amplification equipment are sensitive to wind and rain.

Do you only book saxophonists in Hong Kong and Bangkok?

No. While Hong Kong and Bangkok are our main hubs, we also book saxophonists for events in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Phuket and other cities in the region on request. Pricing and availability vary by city, so send your date and location for a quote.
