Quick answer

To hire a pianist in Hong Kong or Bangkok, tell us the date, venue, guest count and whether you want a grand piano, an acoustic upright or a digital keyboard. We place solo pianists and piano led trios for wedding ceremonies, cocktail receptions and corporate dinners in both cities, plus Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Most pianists play two sets of 45 minutes or three sets of 40, reading jazz standards, classical pieces and pop arrangements from a shared song list agreed before the event. Guide fees run from roughly HKD 3,500 to HKD 9,000 per set block in Hong Kong and THB 15,000 to THB 40,000 in Bangkok, depending on instrument and musician level.

1. The booking

What a pianist booking actually includes

A pianist booking is not just a musician showing up with a repertoire list. It includes the instrument or the arrangement to get one on site, the sound reinforcement if the room needs it, and a run sheet that tells the pianist exactly when to play and when to pause for speeches or toasts. For a wedding, this usually means prelude music as guests arrive, something quiet for the processional, a different piece for the signing of the register if there is one, and then cocktail hour music that shifts the mood from formal to social. For a corporate dinner, it is background piano through arrival and dining, dropping in volume when the MC speaks, and picking up again once the formal programme ends.

We book solo pianists most often for ceremonies and cocktail hours, and piano plus double bass or piano plus a vocalist for dinners where the room wants a fuller sound without a full band. If you already know you want something bigger, our live bands in Bangkok and Hong Kong page covers trio, quartet and full band line-ups that can follow the piano set.

2. The instrument

Grand piano, upright or keyboard: what the venue decides

The venue decides the instrument more often than the client does. Hotel ballrooms in Hong Kong and Bangkok that host weddings and galas regularly often have a house grand or baby grand already in the room, tuned and maintained by the hotel. If that is the case, your pianist plays on it and there is no rental cost. If the venue has no piano, which is common in rooftop bars, function rooms in office towers, and most harbour or river cruise boats, we bring a digital stage piano. A good stage piano with weighted keys sounds close enough to acoustic that most guests cannot tell the difference from across a room, and it travels in a case that fits a standard lift or boat gangway.

Renting an acoustic upright or grand for a one night event is possible in both cities but it adds cartage, tuning and sometimes a second visit to retune after the piano settles from the move. It is worth it for a formal ceremony in a space built for it. It is usually not worth it for a cocktail hour on a rooftop or a boat, where a digital piano through a small PA does the job and nobody notices the difference once the room is full and people are talking.

3. Hong Kong

Hong Kong venues we book pianists into

In Hong Kong we place pianists most often in hotel ballrooms on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon, in rooftop and sky bars where a solo piano suits the view better than a loud band, and on dinner cruises around Victoria Harbour where deck space and power are both limited. Harbour cruise bookings need confirmation early because boat capacity for musicians and gear is fixed and cannot be adjusted on the day. Clubhouses and private members' venues in the mid levels and on the south side also book solo pianists for engagement parties and smaller corporate dinners, usually with a digital piano since most of these rooms were not built around an acoustic instrument.

Chinese New Year is the busiest stretch for corporate pianists in Hong Kong, since most companies run their annual dinner or client reception in the weeks around it. If your event lands in that window, lock the date as early as you can, ideally three months out, because pianists who also read Cantonese pop and know a few auspicious instrumental pieces for the season get booked first.

4. Bangkok

Bangkok venues we book pianists into

In Bangkok, pianists work often on Chao Phraya river dinner cruises, in hotel ballrooms along Sukhumvit and Silom, and in the lobby lounges and rooftop bars that many five star hotels run as a nightly fixture. River cruises have the same constraint as Hong Kong harbour boats: fixed deck space, fixed power points, and a load in window that cannot move once the boat's schedule is set. Riverside hotel lawns and garden venues used for weddings need a weatherproof setup for the keyboard and amp, since Bangkok's outdoor events run a real risk of rain even outside the main wet season.

Songkran in April and Loy Krathong later in the year both affect availability, since many musicians play festival stages and public events during those weeks on top of private bookings. If your wedding or dinner falls near either, confirm your pianist earlier than you normally would. For a full wedding entertainment plan that includes the piano alongside a band, an MC or dancers, our wedding planner Asia page walks through how the pieces fit together.

5. Pricing

Guide pricing for Hong Kong and Bangkok

Pianist fees depend on the musician's level, the number of sets, whether a PA and a second musician are involved, and whether a piano needs renting and tuning. The ranges below are a starting point to confirm with a quote, not a fixed rate card.

CityBooking typeGuide fee (per event)

BangkokPiano plus bass or vocalist, 2 to 3 setsTHB 32,000 to THB 60,000

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur follow a similar pattern, with Singapore fees generally landing closer to Hong Kong's range and Kuala Lumpur closer to Bangkok's. All figures above vary by season, musician experience and how far in advance you book, so treat them as a planning range rather than a quote.

The most expensive mistake is assuming the venue's house piano will be available and in tune without checking. Hotels often lend their ballroom piano to multiple events in one week, and if it has not been tuned recently, or if another act has already booked it for a soundcheck slot that clashes with yours, you find out on the day with no time to fix it. Confirm the piano's condition and availability directly with the venue, or ask us to confirm it as part of the booking, before you assume it is covered.
6. Planning

Lead time and what to tell us

Book four to six weeks out for a standard cocktail hour or dinner booking in either city, and three months out if your date falls near Chinese New Year in Hong Kong or Songkran and Loy Krathong in Bangkok, since pianists who work the festival circuit get booked early for those weeks. Weddings on a Saturday in peak wedding months in both cities also move fast, so six to eight weeks ahead is safer than four.

When you contact us, tell us the date, city and venue, the guest count, whether the venue already has a piano, and the style you want: classical for a ceremony, jazz standards for cocktails, or a broader pop and jazz mix for dinner background music. If you are planning a larger programme with a band set, an MC or dancers around the piano, our musicians page and our corporate entertainment Asia page both show how a pianist slots into a bigger night, and our event management page covers what we handle if you want the whole evening run by one team.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a pianist in Hong Kong?

A solo pianist playing two sets on a digital piano with house sound typically runs HKD 3,500 to HKD 5,500 in Hong Kong. Adding an acoustic grand rental with tuning, or a second musician such as a bassist or vocalist, pushes the range to roughly HKD 7,000 to HKD 13,000. The final figure depends on musician experience, set length and whether the venue already has a usable piano. Confirm with a quote for your specific date and venue.

Do I need to provide a piano or does the pianist bring one?

It depends on the venue. Most hotel ballrooms in Hong Kong and Bangkok already have a grand or baby grand on site, so the pianist plays on that at no extra cost. Rooftop bars, boats and most outdoor venues have no piano, so we bring a digital stage piano instead. If you specifically want an acoustic instrument and the venue has none, we can arrange a rental, which adds cartage and tuning costs.

Can a pianist play during the wedding ceremony and the reception?

Yes. This is one of the most common bookings we handle. The pianist typically plays prelude music as guests arrive, a processional piece, sometimes music for the signing of the register, then shifts to cocktail hour repertoire once the ceremony ends. You give us your song preferences in advance and we confirm the running order with the pianist before the day.

How long does a pianist play for at a corporate dinner?

Most bookings run two sets of around 45 minutes each or three sets of around 40 minutes, with short breaks between sets. For a full dinner event, the pianist typically plays through arrival and dining, drops to low background volume during speeches or the formal programme, and picks the set back up afterward. Total playing time across a standard evening booking is usually two to three hours.

Can I request specific songs for my event?

Yes. Pianists work from a song list agreed before the event, covering classical pieces for ceremonies, jazz standards for cocktail hours, and pop or contemporary arrangements for dinners and parties. Send your preferences, including any must play songs or songs to avoid, when you book. Most pianists can learn one or two specific requests outside their regular repertoire if given a few weeks' notice.

Is a pianist available on short notice in Hong Kong or Bangkok?

Sometimes, depending on the date and season. Outside peak periods such as Chinese New Year in Hong Kong or Songkran and Loy Krathong in Bangkok, we can often place a solo pianist within one to two weeks. During peak wedding months or festival weeks, availability tightens fast, so four to six weeks' notice is safer, and three months is recommended for the busiest windows.

To check pianist availability for your date, send the date, city, venue and guest count on WhatsApp at +65 9428 4249 or through our contact page, and we will come back with a quote and options for your venue.
