Stilt Walkers in Hong Kong and Bangkok

Tall, visual, built for crowds: here is what it actually takes to book stilt walkers for a launch, parade or mall activation in either city.

Quick answer

Stilt walkers in Hong Kong and Bangkok typically cost HKD 3,800 to 7,500 per performer in Hong Kong, or THB 12,000 to 28,000 per performer in Bangkok, for a 30 to 60 minute engagement booked in sets of two to four. Rates depend on costume theme, headpiece height, whether the act is static meet-and-greet or a choreographed walkabout, and outdoor versus indoor venue. Book four to six weeks ahead for weekends, longer around Chinese New Year or Songkran when performers are in high demand across the region.

1. The format

What a stilt walker booking actually includes

A stilt walker booking is not just a tall person in a costume standing still. Most clients hire either a roaming act, where the performer works a crowd for photos and interaction, or a parade act, where two or more performers move through a route in formation, sometimes with flags, lanterns or illuminated costume elements for evening events. A smaller number of bookings ask for a static "welcome" position at an entrance, which is the simplest brief and the lowest cost per hour.

Sets usually run 20 to 30 minutes of active walking followed by a break, repeated two or three times across an event. Stilts themselves run from around 60cm aluminium stilts for indoor mall work to 1 to 1.5 metre stilts for outdoor parade visibility. Taller stilts need more floor clearance and are rarely suitable for ballrooms with low chandeliers or tight service corridors.

If you are planning a wider entertainment lineup around the stilt walkers, such as a dance performance or a live set from one of our live bands in Bangkok and Hong Kong, it is worth briefing all of it together so the running order and stage changes are planned as one show rather than three separate bookings.

2. Pricing

Guide prices for Hong Kong and Bangkok stilt walkers

Pricing moves on four things: number of performers, costume complexity, duration, and whether it is an indoor or outdoor brief. Outdoor parade work in heat or on uneven ground usually costs more than an air-conditioned mall atrium booking of the same length, because of the physical demand on the performer. These are guide ranges only. Confirm the actual quote once we know your date, venue and costume theme.

Booking typeHong Kong (HKD)Bangkok (THB)Typical duration

LED or illuminated costumes for evening outdoor events add to the base rate, as do custom costumes built to match a brand colour or mascot. If you are also considering a full program of entertainment, our event management team can bundle stage, sound and performer logistics into one quote instead of separate line items.

3. Venues

Where stilt walkers work best in each city

In Hong Kong, stilt walkers are most requested for mall atrium launches in Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mongkok, where the open floor height suits a 1 metre stilt and there is natural foot traffic to draw in. Rooftop bars and hotel ballroom events tend to use shorter stilts or keep the act to a 15 minute entrance moment, since ceiling height and narrow service lifts limit movement. Harbour cruises on Victoria Harbour almost never use stilt walkers, the deck space is too tight and the motion of the boat is a real safety issue, we usually suggest a walkaround act or a duo dance set instead for that format.

In Bangkok, outdoor mall forecourts along Sukhumvit and Siam, and open piazza spaces at riverside developments, are the strongest fit. Chao Phraya river dinner cruises face the same deck limitation as Hong Kong harbour cruises, so stilt walkers there are usually confined to the pier area before boarding rather than onboard. Hotel rooftop launches in Bangkok sometimes ask for a shorter stilt, closer to 60 to 80cm, to clear low bar structures and outdoor lighting rigs.

For weddings, stilt walkers suit outdoor garden ceremonies and resort arrival points far better than indoor ballrooms. If a stilt act is part of a wedding brief, it usually sits alongside other elements we help plan through our wedding planning service in Asia.

4. Logistics

Stage, space and power requirements

Stilt walkers need more floor clearance than most clients expect. A minimum ceiling height of 3.2 to 3.5 metres is standard for a 1 metre stilt plus headpiece, and outdoor parade acts need a clear path at least 2 metres wide free of overhead cables, low branches or awnings. Performers also need a changing area with a chair, since getting into and out of stilts takes a few minutes and is not something to do in a public corridor.

  • Flat, dry, non-slip ground: wet marble lobbies and rain-slicked plazas are the most common reason a booking gets modified on site
  • No raw stairs in the performance route, ramps only
  • Changing space near the performance area, with privacy
  • Power only needed if the costume is illuminated or if a wireless mic is used for an MC-style stilt act
  • A 10 to 15 minute rest between sets, especially for outdoor Bangkok bookings in daytime heat
The most expensive mistake

Confirming a stilt act for an outdoor event without checking the ground surface and ceiling or cable clearance in advance. We have had bookings arrive to find wet tiles, overhead festoon wiring at head height, or a route with stairs, none of which were mentioned in the original brief. Changing the act on the day, or cutting it, costs more than a short site check would have. Send us photos or a floor plan of the actual route before we confirm.

5. Timing

Lead times and festival season bookings

Four to six weeks is a comfortable lead time for a standard stilt walker booking in either city. Custom costumes, built to match a brand mascot or a specific colour palette, need six to eight weeks since the costume itself has to be made or sourced and fitted. Weekday bookings and off season dates can sometimes be confirmed in two weeks if performers are free.

Demand spikes hard around Chinese New Year in Hong Kong, when mall activations and lion dance adjacent entertainment book out early, and around Songkran and Loy Krathong in Bangkok, when outdoor festival entertainment of every kind is in short supply. Diwali and Hari Raya periods also see a rise in demand for themed walkabout entertainment across the region if your event falls near those dates. If your date sits inside any of these windows, get in touch as early as possible, ideally two to three months out.

6. Other cities

Stilt walkers in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

We book the same act in Singapore, most often for Sentosa resort events and outdoor corporate activations, and in Kuala Lumpur, where KLCC area malls and hotel forecourts are the usual venues. Pricing in SGD and MYR follows the same drivers as Hong Kong and Bangkok: performer count, costume, duration and indoor versus outdoor. We also arrange stilt walkers on request for Macau and Phuket, usually tied to a resort launch or a festival weekend, so ask even if your city is not listed here.

7. The brief

What to tell the agency before we quote

A fast, accurate quote depends on a short, specific brief. Tell us the date, city and exact venue, whether the space is indoor or outdoor, the ceiling height if indoor, how many performers you want, and whether you need a themed or custom costume. If the stilt act is one part of a bigger program, for example alongside a corporate entertainment lineup or working with musicians from our musicians roster, mention that too, it affects staging and timing.

How much does it cost to hire stilt walkers in Hong Kong?

A single stilt walker in Hong Kong typically costs HKD 3,800 to 6,500 for a 45 to 60 minute booking, depending on whether it is a static welcome act or a roaming walkabout. Duos and themed costumes run higher. These are guide figures, confirm against your date and costume brief.

How much does it cost to hire stilt walkers in Bangkok?

A single stilt walker in Bangkok typically runs THB 12,000 to 22,000 for a 45 to 60 minute booking. Outdoor parade formations with multiple performers and custom costumes run from THB 50,000 upward. Ground surface and heat breaks factor into outdoor pricing.

Can stilt walkers perform indoors at a mall or hotel ballroom?

Yes, but ceiling height matters. A 1 metre stilt plus headpiece needs around 3.2 to 3.5 metres of clearance, which most mall atriums have but many ballrooms with chandeliers do not. For low ceilings we use shorter stilts, around 60 to 80cm, or keep the act to a brief entrance moment rather than a full walkabout.

How far in advance should I book stilt walkers?

Four to six weeks for a standard booking, six to eight weeks if you want a custom costume built or matched to a brand colour or mascot. During Chinese New Year in Hong Kong or Songkran and Loy Krathong in Bangkok, book two to three months ahead since outdoor entertainment of this kind sells out early.

Are stilt walkers suitable for harbour cruises or river dinners?

Generally no. Deck space on Victoria Harbour cruises and Chao Phraya river dinner boats is too tight and the boat motion is a safety concern on stilts. We usually position stilt walkers at the pier before boarding and suggest a walkaround act or dance performance for the onboard entertainment instead.

Do stilt walkers need special stage or power setup?

No stage is required, but they do need flat, dry, non-slip ground, a clear path at least 2 metres wide free of low cables or awnings, and a private area to change into the stilts. Power is only needed if the costume is illuminated or a wireless mic is used for a hosting role.
